Social - Emotional Learning (SEL)
During the 2023–2024 school year, Westbrook Public Schools began implementing a comprehensive PreK–12 social-emotional learning (SEL) program tailored to each school’s needs.
Daisy Ingraham Elementary School adopted the Second Step curriculum. Westbrook Middle School introduced SEL through the WYN (What You Need) framework and the Discovery Project, which embed emotional and social skill-building. Westbrook High School will initiate SEL beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, offering three SEL lesson plans per grade level, organized by 9th through 12th grade, and written in curriculum map style, all of which were finalized on August 11, 2025. Below, you can find the high school SEL lesson plans, organized by grade level.

Disclosure: On May 27, 2026, Westbrook Public Schools completed a comprehensive review and update of the Grades 6–8 Health Curriculum Maps, incorporating all instructional materials provided by teachers and conducting an AI‑assisted analysis to verify alignment with Connecticut Health Standards. The review confirmed strong coverage in major content areas, including Alcohol, Nicotine, and Other Drugs, Disease Prevention and Control, Nutrition, Sexual Health, Mental and Emotional Health, Safety and Injury Prevention, and CPR/AED instruction, while also identifying several areas requiring clearer coding or expanded instruction, such as Healthy Relationships, Sexual Assault and Abuse Prevention, Violence Prevention, and additional Sexual Health indicators.
Please note that Grade 8 currently contains fewer stand‑alone units than Grades 6 and 7, presenting opportunities to incorporate missing standards. Recommendations include adding explicit Healthy Relationships instruction, expanding SAAP standards beyond the introductory four, strengthening Sexual Health coding in Grade 8, incorporating missing ANOD and HEPA indicators, and adding a safety mini‑unit to address SIP gaps. As updates are made, this page will be updated.

Disclosure: In 2022, the Connecticut State Department of Education released the "Healthy and Balanced Living Curriculum Framework" for Health and Physical Education.
Disclaimer from Westbrook Public Schools As of August 30, 2025, the high school health department updated its entire curriculum (Health I and Health II) to adhere to the state framework. In addition to the new curriculum meeting the key components of that framework, it also is tied to the National Health Education Standards, CASEL competencies, essential core content, and grade level performance indicators.
